Cameras for Girls: creating jobs for women in Africa · Upcoming webinars · Arvorei team profile · Arvorei news: CanExport

Canadian-founded charity with Global Impact

Several years ago, as I was pivoting my translation business and beginning to network across Canada, I met Amina Mohamed. She was in the early stages of building a charity to support young women in her country of origin, Uganda, overcome gender barriers and build careers in photography, storytelling and mediafields where women are often underrepresented in Africa.

Cameras for Girls is different because it leads to job creation for African Women

In the short term, creating meaningful employment opportunities is crucial to helping women escape poverty. But in the long term, helping young women launch careers in Africa’s traditionally male-dominated media will lead to societal change and gender equality.

Economic empowerment is at the heart of Cameras for Girls’ mission and values. By emphasizing job creation, they help women across Africa become financially independent and seed deep and lasting change.

Their vision is to create a future where 30,000 women across 7 African countries use photography to challenge gender inequality by 2030.

Their impact to date:

89 girls taught in the 4-phase year-long program (64 in Uganda + 25 in Tanzania)

1,000+ girls taught through their Online Learning Hub

80% of students have found paid work in media with their new skills

How do they do it? Their approach is simple & powerful

Cameras For Girls uses photography as the catalyst for gender equality in Africa.

They equip women with cameras to keep and train them in photography, storytelling, and business skills.

The result: Graduates are breaking gender barriers, pursuing careers as journalists and photographers in what has been until now, male-dominated spaces.

CFG students don't just learn to capture the world—they seize it with newfound confidence. The program opens new career options for African women, helps reduce gender inequality, and combats poverty.

Amina is about to leave for Uganda to train 4 more groups of students. I’ve become a monthly supporter of Cameras for Girls and am inviting my friends, colleagues, clients and community to join me.

Meet Joanie

Joanie is an ATIO certified translator with 14+ years of experience with expertise in mining engineering, travel, telecommunications, retail, sports, and food and beverage.

When not translating or writing articles, Joanie spends a lot of time being active. She has competed in many different sports such as Olympic Weightlifting (the name of the sport, not the Olympics), powerlifting, horseback riding, jiu jitsu, running, and triathlons. When she wants to just have fun, Joanie enjoys mountaineering, swimming, hiking, and camping.

Joanie recently became a mother to a beautiful little girl. With the unwavering help and love of her husband, she is now trying to figure out how to be the best mom to her overly active daughter, while managing two different careers and her personal fitness goals.

Because of her deep passion for sports and physical activity, and being a new mom, Joanie has aspirations to work with pregnant and post-partum people as a certified personal trainer.
