The US Market: should you stay or should you go?

Are you one of countless Canadian businesses bearing the weight of U.S. tariffs? Were you considering entering the U.S. market before the tariff threat and now changing your mind?

Despite the increasing costs of doing business in the U.S., it remains one of the largest and most accessible consumer markets in the world, with over 330 million people and high purchasing power. Even with tariffs, the volume of potential sales can outweigh the increased costs, especially for unique, high-value, or niche Canadian products.

Beyond market size and consumer demand, here are two more reasons Canadian companies might still want to consider entering, or staying in, the U.S. market despite the tariffs:

  1. Proximity and Lower Operational Barriers
Shared geography, language, and business norms make the U.S. significantly easier and less costly to navigate, compared to more distant international markets. Logistics, customer service, and cross-border operations are still relatively efficient and scalable.

  2. Strategic Market Learning and Brand Credibility
Competing in the U.S. provides valuable insights into scaling in competitive environments and builds brand credibility that can open doors in other global markets. Success in the U.S. often serves as a point of validation for international investors and partners.

In this edition, we’re featuring one of our team members who brings to her translation work deep expertise in a field that is entirely different from translation, but which contributes to her strengths as a translator: acting.

As such, Naina has been the perfect fit for one of Arvorei’s regular clients, Bard on the Beach Theatre Society, who hire us to translate the synopses of their 4 plays into the six languages that best represent their 100,000 guests every year, namely, Punjabi, Farsi, Spanish, French, Korean, and Chinese.

Meet Naina

Based in Mumbai, Naina translates from English into Punjabi and Hindi. Her primary career is acting. As a graduate of the Screen Acting course from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, her film Eeb Allay Ooo was showcased at film festivals across the world, including the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival 2020. Her last release, Tribhuvan Mishra CATopper on Netflix gained accolades as a series that portrays women’s desires in a positive way, upends men, and shows inversion of shame.

She is currently working with LA-based film director Molly Karna on her feature film, Machhli, based on the transgender community in Kalyan. Machhli is a narrative fiction film utilising non-professional actors playing themselves in a mixture of scripted and improvised scenes. Naina is working as the acting mentor with all the characters of the film and workshopping with them. She will be working with director Ashmita Guha who won the Grand Prix at the Cinefondation section of the Cannes International Film Festival and the Orona award at the NEST section of the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2020 on her first feature film in the capacity of script consultant and an acting mentor. The film is set to go into production by 2026.
